The Lakeshore is on Lake Michigan's eastern shore. To reach the Visitor Center and Headquarters in Empire, take Highway M-22 from Leland and Frankfort and M-72 from Traverse City.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open year round. Peak visitor month is August. Climate: January, 16 to 32 degrees F; July, 60 to 84 degrees F. Average annual precipitation, 28 to 36 inches.
POINTS OF INTEREST
This is a diverse landscape with massive sand dunes, quiet birch-lined streams, white sand beaches, dense beech-maple forests, clear lakes, and rugged bluffs towering as high as 460 feet above Lake Michigan. Two offshore wilderness islands offer tranquility and seclusion.
Snowmobiles are permitted on county roads. Many hiking trails lead through forests and sand dunes. Food, supplies, and camping facilities are available in the Park, as well as in the surrounding areas. Overnight accommodations may be found in Empire, Glen Arbor, Honor, and Frankfort.
